Exclusive Subvader Interview

Welcome to the first Electrolights exclusive interview! Here we are with Subvader, master producer and super cool dude. Michigan’s pride and glory while keeping it classy. Unless you've been on Mars for the past 8 months, you have probably heard his track Pouncer. Anyways, he has been kind enough to sit down and give us a little teaser of the man behind the mask. Without further ado, let me introduce you to Mr. Subvader.

EL: So, how did you come across the name Subvader?

SV: I guess I just really like the concept of combining Darth Vader and subwoofers! I had a song that Trenchant Dubs was interested in releasing, so I had to come up with a 'producer name.' It's kind of stupid, but at least I'm cognizant of that haha.

EL: Tell us a bit about yourself, maybe some early childhood musical encounters?

SV: Well, music is pretty important to my family so I grew up taking piano lessons. I eventually took up trombone and I began to study guitar. When I was 13, my dad bought me some basic recording software because previously I was using a simple one track tape recorder. After that, I became completely addicted to recording music and writing songs.

El: Your equipment of choice for producing music?

SV: I just use a Macintosh, some hardsynths, some softsynths... it's pretty basic really.

EL: Oh shit! Your studio is on fire! You have time to save one thing! What is it?

SV: DAMN that's a tough question!! Well considering I don't have any pets in there, I would probably grab my external harddrive. The contents of that puppy are worth far more to me than anything else I have.

EL: Would you say any other artists have had influences on your work?

SV: Totally man... I really look up to the whole Croydon dubstep crew (especially Skream cuz he's the man). But I don't like to limit myself to dubstep. Diplo, Andre 3k, Dr Dre, J Dilla, Madlib, and Tom Morello are some specific artists that I dig.

EL: If you weren't producing music, what do you think you’d be doing?

SV: I really love to ski and I'm getting a degree in sociology, so I'd probably be a ski bum ;)

EL: If the apocalypse happened, and you were the only one left to fight out the zombie invasion, what would be your weapon of choice?

SV: A shotgun forsure! I had a friend back in highschool who used to read zombie-survival books and he always told me that shotguns work the best.

EL: If you could open for any act and play any venue, who and what would it be?

SV: I think it'd be pretty rad to go back in time and play Woodstock, opening for Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix is a god to me, and I think people would have been TRIPPIN if somebody had dropped a dubstep tune in 1969!

EL: With your last E.P. Riding The Night, we saw a slight change in pace between the songs compared to your first E.P. Can you tell us a bit how the Riding The Night came together?

SV: Well, I was working in a factory at the time, so during the day I could let my mind run free and focus on the songs that I was writing when I was home. Also, I was going through sort of a sad time away from school, so the album was put together with a lot of emotion and a lot of consideration.

EL: What are some tunes you can't stop listening to right now?

SV: "Church" by the 2 Bears blows my mind every time I hear it.

EL: Any new projects we can be sure to look out for in the near future?

SV: Yeah! I've been doing work with RIS Labs, a label out of San Francisco, and they should be putting out my remix of "Tonight" by Eddie Hoey in the next month or so. After that, I've got a single release with remixes by some other pretty sick dudes... I'm also getting close to finishing a full-length album that they're gonna release next April... I can't wait!!!

EL: Thanks Subvader, we send our love from Idaho.

SV: You're a ho?

Dude I love Idaho... great hiking and backpacking to be done there!
